Basil & Jean Baldwin honoured for contribution to Australian hazelnut industry

Basil and Jean Baldwin have been awarded Life Membership of Hazelnut Growers of Australia, in recognition of their immense contribution to the development of our industry.

The Baldwins are synonymous with Australian hazelnut production over the last fifty years. Their orchard operations at Fourjay Farms near Orange in NSW continue as a centre of innovation and learning, with generations of growers and scientific researchers benefiting from the Baldwins’ expertise.

The award was presented to them during a dinner at our 2025 Australian Hazelnut Conference in Launceston last weekend, with HGA Executive Officer Trevor Ranford commenting:

“For decades the Baldwins have been pioneers, advocates, and steady supporters of the Australian hazelnut industry. Through their orchard, their involvement in HGA, and their generosity in sharing knowledge, they have encouraged and guided many fellow growers.

“Their vision, persistence, and practical contributions have helped shape today’s industry. This honour recognises their outstanding service, their humility, and their enduring commitment to the grower community.”

Basil taught for many years at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Rural Management in Orange, authoring numerous research papers considered as standard reference works including his doctoral thesis The Growth and Productivity of Hazelnut Cultivars in Australia. Beyond horticulture the Baldwins have been recognised by Sport NSW with a Distinguished Long Service Award for Orienteering.

HGA President Andy Gibson said: “The role that Basil and Jean have played in the development of our industry over the last 50 years is a remarkable achievement. Their contribution as growers and educators has been invaluable. Their dedication and commitment to ensuring the success of the hazelnut community in so many different ways has been exceptional. On behalf of all our members: thank you for going above and beyond.”
